Definition of "spherical-capsule":

Mics tagged spherical capsule employ a small-diaphragm condenser capsule inset into an acrylic (aka perspex or lucite) sphere, usually about 4cm in diameter, so that the diaphragm of the capsule is flush with the face of the sphere.

This design was developed by Neumann, working in conjunction with NWDR Laboratories (Northwest German Broadcast labs), around 1948. It was first introduced with the M48 capsule head for the company’s bottle mics such as the CMV 3. It was more famously used in the M50 omnidirectional tube microphone.

The sphere alters the frequency response of the capsule, essentially emphasizing the high frequency response. The result is extremely well-suited to ambient miking techniques such as orchestral recording, in which the recordist would otherwise need to enhance the HF content via outboard EQ.
