Definition of "prethos":

Prethos™ is a microphone amplifier circuit technology developed and trademarked by Shure Bros. The name stands for “preamplifier ethos.”

The Prethos “Advanced Preamplifier Technology” circuits are Class A, discrete, and transformerless. Claimed benefits include:

• Maximized dynamic range
• Minimized self-noise
• Transparency
• Fast transient response time
• No crossover distortion
• Minimized harmonic distortion
• Minimized intermodulation distortion

These amplifier circuits employ surface-mount technology, and are built and populated in the US, then assembled into the KSM microphones at Shure’s facility in Wheeling, IL.

According to Shure, “Prethos™ Advanced Preamplifier Technology” is comprised of three proprietary design attributes:

1. Superior component selection - Extensive research and benchmarking led to the selection of key electronic components based on specific requirements for noise and distortion performance.
2. Breakthrough design topology - “This proprietary design efficiently manages current consumption, yielding a superior output clipping level specification. Isolation of critical components consistently provides best-in-class noise performance with extremely low distortion factors.”
3. Meticulous manufacturing process - “Stringent manufacturing processes are employed during assembly which ensures that the pristine integrity of each component is never compromised. This results in superior noise performance and robust reliability throughout the life of the product.”

The Prethos branding was first seen in 2010, on the KSM44A and KSM42 microphones.
