Dynamic Microphone

The TG D70d is the dedicated bass/kick microphone from beyerdynamic’s “Tour Group” series of live performance microphones. It is a large-diaphragm, moving-coil design. Its polar pattern is nominally hypercardioid, although like its sibling the M99, the rear lobe is significant in size, approaching a figure-8 pattern. Null points are at ±105°.

The mic contains a switchable passive EQ circuit, enabled via a single switch on the bottom of the mic body. The “Linear” mode provides a flat response from 100Hz–2500Hz, followed by presence boost with two +6dB peaks, at 5200Hz and 10kHz. The “EQ” mode acts like a “tilt” switch, by rolling off the response by about 4dB below 1kHz, and boosting the high-mid response to +9dB at 5kHz.

This EQ circuit matches the M99’s “flat” and “EQ” modes (although the M99 has a 2nd switch enabling a 3rd EQ option for additional presence boost).

The same moving-coil cartridge is used in both microphones. It has a diameter of 37.2mm, and a Hostaphan (Mylar) diaphragm.

In the D70d, this cartridge is capped with a “two-stage treble resonator,” essentially a passive EQ device constructed of metal mesh and a conical waveform device.

The mic incorporates a humbucking coil, but does not use an output transformer. Output impedance is 280Ω.

The mic ships with the MKV 99 clamp. The MKV99 is a hard mount with a rubber collar. Note that the EA 90 elastic suspension mount is available as an optional accessory.
