CardioidSontronics STC-6

Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The STC-6 is a handheld condenser microphone from Sontronics that is designed primarily for live use on vocals.

The STC-6’s capsule is a 22 mm gold-sputtered capsule with a fixed cardioid pattern. It features recessed switches for a -10 dB pad and hi-pass filter at 75 Hz. The mic’s body has a series of grooves running across the middle, to aid in gripping while on stage.

Sontronics attributes the STC-6 a frequency range of 30 Hz - 20 kHz, and the published response graph reveals prominent rises at 40 Hz, 2 kHz, and just above 10 kHz. The capsule is internally shock-mounted, though especially rough stage situations may require use of the hi-pass filter to eliminate rumble from creeping into the signal. One reviewer notes that the low-end boost can lead to difficulty achieving a balanced vocal sound:

…the impressive low end of the STC-6 microphone also meant that vocal popping was a real problem, so I switched in the 75Hz low-cut filter. This fixed the popping, but it left the mic with a noticeably bass-light sound.

The STC-6 has a transformerless output circuit, and with 24 dBA of self-noise is very well-suited for live applications but may be less acceptable for studio use.

The STC-6 ships in an aluminum carrying case as opposed to the more common pouch, and includes an appropriately sized clip.

The Sontronics STC-6 is also known as: STC6, STC 6.

The mic was released in 2008.
