Slate Digital ML-2
Pencil Condenser Microphone
The ML-2 is a small-diaphragm condenser microphone with a fixed Cardioid capsule. It is designed to be very accurate, with excellent transient response and wide frequency response, for the purpose of having its sound manipulated digitally through Slate Digital’s “Virtual Microphone System.”
The VMS is a hardware and software based microphone and preamp modeling system that, according to Slate, effectively recreates the sound of dozens of classic microphones and preamps, in any combination. The company has sampled numerous vintage and contemporary microphones’ frequency response, harmonic coloration, phase coherency and saturation behaviors. Stephen Slate suggests that these are the factors that give microphones their characteristic sound.
Steven Slate has commented in public forums that the microphone they found most difficult to model accurately with the ML-2 is the Shure SM57.
The ML-2 will initially be sold only as part of the VMS, which bundles the ML-1 large-diaphragm condenser and the “VMS Dual Preamp Converter,” a 2-channel preamp/ADC that presumably is as neutral and uncolored as both the ML microphones are intended to be.
