CardioidSlate Digital ML-1

Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The ML-1 is a large-diaphragm condenser designed to have an extremely neutral and uncolored sound, excellent transient response, and wide (but flat) frequency response. It is a part of Slate Digital’s “Virtual Microphone System,” which digitally manipulates the ML-1’s output to recreate the sound of numerous vintage microphone and preamp combinations. The ML-1 was not designed to flatter, but to accurately capture a source, specifically for post-processing by the VMS software.

According to the introductory video for the VMS, the digital modeling process combines information about frequency response, harmonic coloration, phase, and saturation behaviors. Stephen Slate suggests that these are the factors that give microphones their characteristic sound.

For the initial release of the VMS, the microphone modeler will only work in Cardioid mode. The ML-1 has no pattern switch.

The ML-1 will initially ship as part of the VMS, with a 2-channel preamp/converter and the ML-2 small-diaphragm condenser. Individual ML-1 microphones will be made available eventually as well.
