Shure VP89S
Shotgun Condenser Microphone
The VP89S is a compact short shotgun microphone. It is the shortest mic of the modular VP89 series, which includes a single preamplifier body and three detachable capsule heads of varying lengths.
The VP89S kit includes the VP89 preamplifier body (aka the “RPM89/PRE”) and VP89S capsule head. The ‘S’ in the model name stands for ‘Short.’
The VP89 head amplifier uses a transformer-coupled output circuit. The three capsule heads employ interference tubes made of aircraft-grade aluminum, nested within the aluminum exterior grille. The assembly is tested to survive a 12-foot drop without breaking. The capsules themselves are mounted at the rear of the interference tube, and are a half-inch electret design manufactured by Shure.
The mic’s frequency response has a natural taper below 200Hz, which is steeper with the onboard HPF filter engaged. It has a broad presence peak at 6kHz.
The 89S has a 70 degree acceptance angle, the widest of the three VP89 models, due to the shorter interference tube.
All VP89-series shotgun mics ship with a foam windscreen (Shure part number A89SW for the VP89S), and a cylindrical storage case (p/n A89SC for the VP89S).
The head amp, aka preamplifier, is available separately (p/n RPM89/PRE), as are the three “capsules”/interference tubes, as well as a unique “double-barrel” adapter that allows the head amplifier to be mounted alongside the interference tube to reduce the overall length of the unit (p/n A89U).
The VP89 mics are compatible with a variety of Rycote-manufactured windshields and Lyre mounts.
