Shure SM5B
Cardioid Dynamic Microphone
The SM5B is a dynamic microphone designed for television and radio broadcast as well as stage and location recording. Its integrated yoke mount makes it easy to position from a boom or mic stand.
The dynamic cartridge (Shure p/n 99B347) was shockmounted via a silicone rubber suspension — essentially, a set of four elastic bands mounted to posts surrounding the cartridge. The cartridge incorporated a humbucking coil to reduce susceptibility to hum fields. The mic has no output transformer.
The published frequency response is relatively flat from 100–15,000 Hz (±3dB). The mic’s response falls off rapidly above 15kHz.
Like its successor, the SM7B, the 5B had excellent Cardioid pattern control. The off-axis response of this mic would be attenuated in volume, but relatively uncolored. The variation in volume or tone from ±30° of center would be all but inaudible.
The mic shipped with a stand adapter (Shure p/n 90A1071), boom adapter (p/n 31A936A), and a wing nut.
