Supercardioid Dynamic Microphone

The Sennheiser e845 is a supercardioid dynamic mic for stage vocal use.

Like all the stage vocal mics in the evolution series, the e845 has a metal body, shockmounted capsule, and integrated humbucking coil to reduce EMI/RFI.

The published frequency chart shows a gently rising response from 100Hz–2kHZ, with a +4dB presence boost centered at 4500Hz. However, as this was measured at 1m, and stage vocal applications require much closer miking distances, it is likely the low-frequency response is much fuller than indicated by the graph.

The mic’s polar pattern is nominally supercardioid, with the nuls widening toward omni at low frequencies, and the high-frequency response being very frequency dependent.

…the presence boost is between 4kHz and 5kHz and is fairly gentle, which avoids the nasal honkiness some vocal mics produce. The overall tonality isn’t much different to that of the E835s, and if I had to compare it with the ubiquitous Shure SM58, I’d say it was slightly more open and brighter sounding, but otherwise not dissimilar.

Two models of the e845 are available:

• e 845 - includes the microphone, a clip (p/n MZQ 800), and storage pouch
• e 845 S - as above, with a noiseless, lockable on/off switch built into the microphone body

The e800 series vocal microphones can be distinguished as follows:

• e815 (cardioid) - inexpensive mics for the consumer market
• e825 (cardioid) - entry-level mic for stage use
• e835 (cardioid) - best-selling vocal mic
• e838 (cardioid) - this is the e840 with a silver finish
• e840 (cardioid) - tuned for better projection on loud stages, improved feedback rejection; has 10-year warranty.
• e845 (supercardioid) - tighter pickup pattern for more feedback rejection is needed

According to Sennheiser, all these microphones share a basic moving-coil cartridge design, but differ in the size and shape of their diaphragms, the coil windings, damping elements, and resonators.
