Omnidirectional Pencil Condenser Microphone

The Sanken CO-100k is a small-diaphragm omni condenser microphone with a stated frequency response of 20Hz–100kHz. It was designed by Sanken in conjunction with NHK, the Japanese Broadcasting Corporation. The CO-100k is part of Sanken’s Chromatic line of studio microphones.

The CO-100k is the first 100kHz microphone designed for recording rather than measurement applications. Therefore, it is not a flat-response microphone. Rather, it has been designed to have a musical response, with a high frequency lift above 16kHz and a larger, 20db boost above 50kHz. These”bumps” (as Sanken calls them) are designed to capture ultra-high frequencies at a distance, eliminating the need for a close mic.

Sound waves become more directional as they increase in amplitude, so though the CO-100k is an omni mic, careful placement is recommended to capture the ultra-high frequencies: the mic should be pointed at the source.

According to Sanken and various internet sources, the CO-100k has been used for in foley work, sound design, and ATMOS capture, but it is seeing increasing use in traditional recording studios for drum overhead and piano recording. Engineer Frank Filipetti reports using the CO-100k on loud guitar amplifiers for the band Korn.

The CO-100k is sold with a vinyl bag and the KS-100 banded suspension mount. Each microphone also includes a card with its own measurement information. The AC-100 case and KS-UNI shock mount are recommended accessories, sold separately.
