Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone

Samson C03 is a multi-pattern side-address condenser.

The mic uses a capsule system described as “dual 19mm capsules,” which is unusual for a side-address multipattern microphone. Also unusual is the choice of patterns, with Supercardioid rather than Cardioid (in addition to Omni and Figure-8). The pattern is selected via a small switch on the mic body, below the grille.

The published polar pattern shows only one frequency, presumably 1kHz. In Supercardioid mode, the side rejection is indeed greater than one would expect from a Cardioid mic: closer to 10dB attenuation, rather than 6dB.

Two other switches below the grille independently enable a pad (-10dB) and a high-pass filter (-12dB/octave @ 100Hz).

Visually the mic is very similar to the entry-level C01. Internally the mics are very different, the C01 using a single electret capsule, and the C03 using a dual-diaphragm true condenser capsule.

The C03 has relatively high self-noise of 23dBA.

It ships with a hard mount and a carrying case (type not specified). The SP01 shockmount is available separately.

Sound On Sound - 2003
I tested this mic with vocals and saxophone, and also used it as a drum overhead, and in all applications it delivered good results, with no obvious faults or problems. The lack of strong presence peaks gives the mic a reassuringly neutral feel, and it captured the subtle detail of the sax very well without sounding strident or honky.
