HypercardioidRØDE S1

Hypercardioid Condenser Microphone

The S1 utilizes a true condenser transducer for studio quality sound reproduction. The S1’s sophisticated high pass filter dramatically reduces undesirable low-frequency background and handling noise. The super cardioid pick-up pattern further limits background noise and virtually eliminates feedback.

The multi-stage mesh head filters breath, wind, and plosive noise without affecting sensitivity or frequency response. The hardened mesh head also protects the precision transducer from the rigors of live performance. The rugged ergonomic design of the S1 makes it extremely comfortable to hold and control during use.

The S1 requires P48 V phantom supply. The high level output of the S1 is electronically balanced to reduce loss over long cable runs.

Terry Manning

RØDE’s new S1 microphone is carefully designed as a live condenser mic with true studio quality. This microphone has a wonderfully constructed windscreen/pop filter, a narrow hyper-cardioid pattern, and phantom powered condenser quality, all in a solid, vocalist-pleasing hand-held instrument.

Electronic Musician, 2005
I tested the S1 on vocals and electric guitar during live performances and studio sessions to see how the mic fared on vocals, trumpet, guitars, drum overheads, and percussion.

The S1 sounded fantastic on stage and proved its mettle in the studio over a range of applications. In its dedicated assignment as a vocal mic, the S1 performed like a champ both onstage and in the studio. The sound was remarkably smooth, present, and clear.

Recording a trumpet in a jazz quintet during a single-room session was easy with the S1 because of the mic’s excellent off-axis rejection and high SPL-handling capabilities. The trumpet track sounded clear and bright with very little bleed from other instruments in the room (including a drum set). So effective is the integrated plosive screening that no pop filter was needed.
