Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone

The NT2000 is a dual-diaphragm, multipattern, large-diaphragm FET condenser featuring low self-noise and a rich set of onboard controls.

The capsule, Rode’s “HF1”, is an edge-terminated, gold-sputtered, twin-diaphragm design. This capsule can also be found in the NT2-A.

The mic’s circuitry employs surface-mount electronics designed for low self-noise (7 dBA) and high SPL handling (157 dB with pad fully engaged). There is no transformer.

The pad switch allows selection of any setting between 0dB and -10dB. The high-pass filter switch allows a 3db cut (@6db/octave) at any frequency between 20 Hz and 150 Hz. The pickup pattern switch allows selection of Cardioid, Omni, Figure-of-8, or anything in between, via a continuously-variable control on the microphone body.

The NT2000 is supplied with the SM2 Shock Mount, together in a hard case.

I first set up a pair of NT2000s as spaced overheads, about 18 inches over the toms, 2 feet apart, aimed straight down,both set to a car- dioid pattern. The resulting recording was, to be completely honest, awesome. There was a incredibly satisfying balance of the elements of the kit, with a nice bit of room sound, and enough kick that a dedicated mic would have been used only for sweetening. I was truly blown away.

I recently (early ‘06) got a couple of the 2000’s, and I have found them very useful on many things. They are a very large [Neumann U-87] styled mic, with a built in continuously variable pattern selector, bass rolloff selector, and pad. They worked well on Drum overheads in X/Y, on percussion, on electric guitars, and on vocals. I used them extensively on background vocals, and they always worked well. I like this mic.

In a close-mic placement on cello, the NT2000 was rich, though a bit dark and lacking upper harmonics. However, the mic did offer good, uncolored off-axis pickup in cardioid mode.

The NT2000 tested well and was a favorite around the studio. It became darker and more midrangy in figure-8 mode, and smaller and brighter, though not at all grating, in omni mode. Although its timbral shifts between polar patterns are more dramatic than those of some of the other mics, the NT2000 always maintains its tonal balance and musical sound quality, making it a truly exciting recording tool.
