Cardioid Condenser Microphone
The TL 66 is an electret condenser microphone with a fixed cardioid pattern.
Unlike many of Pearl’s products, the TL 66 does not use the company’s trademark rectangular membrane. Rather, the mic uses an traditional round capsule obtained from a third party.
Although some marketing material claims the TL66 is available in either Cardioid or Omni, as of 2010 the omni version is out of production.

When she first brought up the unmarked faders for this pair of mics on her drums, [Karen] Stackpole made a face and exclaimed, “Where did the lows go?” I had to agree that, in contrast to the other mics, the Pearls didn’t do justice to the beefy tone of her kit’s kick, toms, or snare. Stackpole ultimately summarized the TL 66 as delivering plenty of crisp attack but not much punch, and she singled it out as her least favorite mic of the pack [which also included the AKG C480B, Audio-Technica AT4051a, Josephson C42, and Neumann KM-184.] That assessment is valid, though I would add that this mic excels at clarity and could be used to add some zip to the sound of a thuddy, dull kit or a timid drummer.
