Multi-Pattern Condenser Stereo Microphone

The TL44 is a multipattern FET condenser microphone with Pearl’s “Model 2800” rectangular capsule. It could be thought of as “half” of the DS60, which bundles two of the same capsule (four diaphragms total) into a multipattern XY-stereo microphone.

The capsule employs dual rectangular polyester membranes, metallized with vaporized aluminum and mounted beneath perforated metal plates that are said to provide stability to the diaphragms. The mic is described as a stereo microphone, although its only stereo mode has a fixed 180° capsule arrangement. The mic’s utility is perhaps more clearly expressed by the connection of the two diaphragms to separate outputs (via a 5-pin XLRM jack). Users can therefore combine the capsule’s back-to-back cardioid outputs to produce an infinite variety of single-point mono pickup patterns, even after tracking is complete. Like all of Pearl’s FET condensers, the TR4 has a transformerless output stage.

The TL44 ships in a padded metal flightcase (AC01). The required 5-pin breakout cable (XLR5F to 2xXLR3M) is available separately.

Compatible shockmounts are available separately:

  • Model 1927 — rubber-donut style clip mount
  • Model 1928 — elastic suspension mount
