Bidirectional Tube Ribbon Microphone

The TRM-6, like the RSM-2, is a “large-geometry” ribbon mic, utilizing a 45mm, 2-micron aluminum ribbon. Unlike the RSM-2 and all Nady’s other passive ribbon mics, the TRM-6 incorporates a tube preamp built around a 12AX7A vacuum tube.

This preamp generates relatively high output levels; the manual claims tha it “allows the convenience of use … without requiring external pre-amplification.” EQ Magazine’s reviewer found this to be true, and in fact needed an inline pad when miking amplified sources.

The User Manual claims a max SPL of 165, although this is likely incorrect; the Nady website gives a more believable value of 135dB.

The mic ships with a power supply and cable, an elastic shockmount, a foam windscreen, and an aluminum flight case. It includes a warranty that expires upon receipt — as the User Guide puts it, “the warranty on this microphone does not extend beyond an initial inspection, since these microphones can be so easy damaged during handling and use.”

The internal preamp was obviously designed to open up the top end, making it more useful on such sources than the average ribbon. As a result, the highs were much more similar to what a condenser would produce, yet retained the smooth, rich nature associated with a ribbon.

The Nady microphone has a smooth, warm, and (dare I say?) fat sound. It?s the kind of microphone that sounds tube-y in a good way. Unlike most of the other “Made in China” tube microphones I have heard, there was no hazy electronic veil overlaid on top of the sound source. Self-noise is stated as a respectable 16dB. Other than usage as an ambient microphone, the self-noise of the microphone was not intrusive, and the characteristic of the noise was broadband enough as to be mostly unobtrusive.

In general, the TRM-6 sounded smooth, with a midrange fullness that was complimentary to a female vocalist with a smoky voice and a male vocalist with a midrangy timbre. While there wasn’t as much clarity in the high end as with a condenser mic, the TRM-6’s sound was still detailed and present with a nice, intimate quality. The mic’s sonic characteristic worked especially well with saxophone and clarinet, sounding silky and rich.
