Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The Monoprice 600850 is a 3-pattern condenser mic with a large-diaphragm capsule and transformer-coupled circuit.

A switch on the front of the mic enables pattern selection: Cardioid, Omni, Fig-8. Two more switches on the rear of the mic independently enable a pad (-10dB) and high-pass filter.

600850 circuitThe circuit is constructed of through-hole components. In our testing, the circuit is linear with respect to frequency — that is, it does not provide any corrective EQ for the capsule.

The front diaphragm in our sample mic was polarized with a constant 122VDC, with the backplate held at 62VDC across all patterns. The rear diaphragm switches from 0V (Fig8) to 60 (Cardioid) to 122 (Omni).

The capsule is a 32mm K67 type. It is suspended in the lollipop grille by a rubberized plastic harness.

The rear side of the grille can be removed by rotating it slightly, then lifting it away from the frame. Once the rear grille is removed, the screws holding the front grille to the frame are exposed.
