Microphone Parts S-25

Condenser Microphone

The S-25 is a medium-diaphragm cardioid electret condenser microphone, sold by Microphone-Parts.com both as a finished microphone and as a DIY kit. Billed as a workhorse microphone, it is suitable for most any studio duty from vocals to drum overheads.

Internally, the S-25 has a Transound TSB-2555 electret capsule that is coupled to MicParts’ “ETL1” circuit. The ETL1 is based on the Schoeps CMC5 circuit, but contains MicParts’ proprietary circuit enhancements. High-quality parts are used throughout:

It uses 1% tolerance resistors, low-noise electrolytic capacitors, imported polypropylene signal caps, and NOS transistors — including an out-of-production JFET that is ideal for this circuit (due to its low capacitance). We manually “bias” every JFET in our shop to ensure that your mic has the highest possible SPL with minimal distortion.

The S-25 kit has a heavy-duty “donor body” silkscreened with the Microphone Parts logo. The headbasket has a dual-layer mesh screen for a degree of pop filtering. Inside, the TSB-2555 sits on a custom U87-esque pedestal that is designed to keep the capsule as far above the mic body as possible, thereby reducing interior reflections.

There is one internal switch - accessible by removing the body sleeve - that can pad the the output down by 10db.

The kit is sold as an entry-level DIY kit for first-time mic builders, and can be assembled in about two hours. It comes with detailed instructions, a zippered mic bag, and swivel mount.
