CardioidMXL VO: 1-A

Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The VO:1-A is a large-diaphragm FET condenser designed for voiceover use. It is part of MXL’s signature series, and is sold direct by Harlan Hogan.

The mic uses a 32mm capsule with a 25mm diaphragm of 6-micron Mylar. It is center-terminated design, and is presumed to be one of MXL’s K67 derivatives.

The amplifier circuit uses through-hole components, and has a transistor (transformerless) output.

The published frequency-response graph is identical to that of the MXL 2006, which shares the VO: 1-A’s body and grille.

The mic ships with a ring mount, a shockmount, spare elastic bands, a fleece storage pouch, a 15-foot Marshall cable, and a foam-lined travel case. Hogan’s “Voiceover Essentials” website offers a 30-day trial period, and a 3-year warranty.

[T]he VO:1- A is noticeably quieter than the Audio Technica AT2020

[T]he VO:1-A is not is not a color-free microphone. It does have a personality, one that I found in most cases to be flattering on voiceover tracks. The combination of solid but controlled low end along with some high-end sheen was usually exactly what the doctor ordered.
