CardioidMXL Genesis II

Tube Condenser Microphone

The Genesis II is a large-diaphragm tube condenser microphone, a hybrid of the company’s successful Genesis and V67i microphones.

The original Genesis is a premium Cardioid condenser mic, built around a NOS Mullard 12AT7 dual-triode tube. The V67i and V67i Tube mics have a unique dual-voice capsule, in which either side of the capsule can be enabled via a “warm/bright” switch. The new Genesis II combines the body, tube, and transformerless amplifier circuit of the Genesis with the dual-voice capsule and switching circuitry of the V67i.

The dual-voice capsule of the V67i microphones uses a 6-micron diaphragm on one side, and an 8-micron diaphragm on the other. Presumably these are tuned differently, as well, to produce the radically different “warm” and “bright” timbres.

The Genesis II capsule is a new design, but we speculate that it retains the idea of using two different membranes, and perhaps two different backplates, mounted back-to-back.

The mic retains the pad (-10dB) and high-pass filter (-6dB/octave @ 150Hz) as the original Genesis.

The V67i (FET and Tube) and Genesis II are three of a very few truly dual-voice microphones on the market.

Genesis II Power SupplyThe Genesis II will be officially announced at Winter NAMM 2011 (Jan 13). The mic will ship in a padded wooden storage case, with a power supply, elastic shockmount, detachable metal mesh pop filter, and Mogami cable set.

Full specs and pricing information have not yet been released.
