CardioidMXL DX-2

Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The MXL DX-2 is a dual-capsule side-address mono dynamic microphone designed for capturing electric guitar amps in the studio and on stage.

Though the microphone can be mounted on a stand with the included swivel mount, it is designed to be hung by a mic cable in front of a guitar amp. The front of the mic is flat to accommodate this positioning. The markings on the mic read right-side-up when the mic is positioned this way.

The DX-2 is a mono microphone, having a single, standard XLR output, but it contains two capsules, each wired to one side of a blend potentiometer. That potentiometer — labeled as a crossfader on the rear (rounded) side of the mic — is used to mix the signal of the two capsules.

Capsule #1 is a supercardioid capsule, and it is the larger of the two, and is situated closer to the output jack. Capsule #2 is a small-diaphragm cardioid capsule. The capsules are internally phase-aligned with one another.

The supercardioid capsule has a fuller sound and a less pronounced high-end rise. The smaller capsule is brighter and more focused.

There are two types of mesh as well as open-cell foam on the front (flat) side of the mic, and more foam on the back side for shielding the mic from wind gusts on stage.

The DX-2 is sold with a bag and swivel mount.

The mic was released in 2016.
