Mods for the 909

  • Microphone PartsMicrophone Parts
Designed by Jim Williams, the new MXL 2006 Basic Mod kit raises the mic’s sensitivity and lowers the noise floor, and upgrades key capacitors, resulting in a much more useful mic for minimal effort. For more experienced modders, the Advanced Mod Kit overhauls the entire audio circuit with esoteric parts, including bipolar transistors, FET, metal film resistors and more. The resulting mic has better transient response, much lower noise, and much wider frequency response. Both kits can be paired with a K47, CK-12, or K67 style capsule.

Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The MXL 909 is a transformerless large-diaphragm FET condenser with a fixed Cardioid polar pattern.

Based on photos we have seen of the mic’s internals, the 909 is identical to the MXL 2006. Both use MXL’s 32mm, single-sided K67 capsule variant. Both use the V57 PCB set, also found in the MCA SP-1, MXL V250, and other models.

This particular circuit was pioneered by Schoeps; it is a transformerless design that is very responsive to aftermarket component upgrades. See the sidebar for commercial modification options.

Like most of the 900 series condensers, the 909 ships with a metal-frame elastic shockmount (MXL p/n MXL-56) and a foam-lined plastic suitcase.
