Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The HM-3C is a side-address cardioid FET condenser microphone designed for neutral, uncolored, “unforgiving” reproduction.

Like its sibling, the HM-1, the HM-3C is a small-diaphragm condenser. The two mics share a capsule design, which we believe uses a 12.5mm diaphragm in a 20mm housing, and a 3-micron diaphragm. The capsule is a “true condenser” (externally biased).

Kel Audio

The HM-3C starts with a 20mm capsule based on the same design used in our popular HM-1. The polar pattern is tighter… and the capsule voicing and circuit give the HM-3C a slightly more open top end, while starting to roll off below 50Hz to control subharmonic rumble.

The mic’s frequency chart ends at 40Hz, and shows a -5dB dip at 45Hz. On the HF end, there is a gentle rise to +3dB at 6500Hz; the mic’s output stays relatively flat at +2dB through 20kHz.

We believe the HM-3C amplifier circuit is transformerless.

The mic ships with an elastic shockmount in an aluminum flight case.

The Kel Audio HM-3C is also known as: HM3C.

The mic was released in 2009.
