Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The C705 from Josephson is a large-diaphragm, side-address condenser microphone with a cardioid polar pattern. This mic borrows features from other Josephson microphones, with the intent of providing a lower-cost alternative.

The C705 uses a center-terminated capsule, based on the C715 capsule, which in turn was based on the innovative mechanically-adjustable Sony C37 capsule. The C705’s cardioid pattern is achieved by using acoustic ports rather than the interaction between two diaphragms. The gold-sputtered diaphragm is 5 microns thick and, being a single diaphragm, displays a noticeable proximity effect.

On the C705, Josephson uses a traditional mesh grille rather than the foamed metal basket of the 715. In order to approximate the reduction of standing waves and basket resonances the metal foam provides, they have offset the vertical steel supports on the sides of the grille, thereby minimizing resonance issues inherent in a symmetrical design.

The circuit is a transformerless cascode FET design derived from Josephson’s C700 and C716 designs.

Where many of their designs use brass bodies, the C705 is made of hardened steel and manufactured in conjunction with Latch Lake Music Products. The mic employs an internal shock-mounting system, eliminating the need for an external shock mount — the C705 swivel yoke mounts directly to a stand. Josephson have eliminated the captive cable on this model, instead placing an XLR jack on the rear of the mic body.
