Josephson Engineering C700A
Multi-Pattern Condenser Microphone
The Josephson C700A is a unique dual-capsule FET condenser microphone. The body contains two separate capsules, FET amplifiers, and output circuits. By recording both capsules’ signals individually, engineers can vary the resulting pickup pattern from omni to Figure-of-8 at mixdown, by adjusting the relative levels of these two signals.
The smaller of the two capsules is an omnidirectional design with a 16mm-diameter diaphragm, physically similar to Josephson’s KA11 capsule. It has a single 5-micron diaphragm, and is David Josephson’s own design.
The larger capsule is a 34mm, dual-backplate design, based on the later versions of AKG’s CK12 capsule. It has dual edge-terminated 26mm diaphragms made of 5-micron Mylar.
The capsules are internally shock-mounted, avoiding the need for a separate external shockmount.
The mic contains two separate amplifiers, one for each capsule. The output circuits are transformerless.
The C700A has a single 5-pin XLR output connector, but is shipped with a breakout adapter that splits into two standard XLR jacks.
MIX
Varying the ratio of the [omni] channel to [figure 8] channel changes the shape of the pattern. With no [figure 8] channel added, the result is omni; hypercardioid when [omni] is 10 dB lower than [figure 8]; or wide-cardioid when the [omni] channel exceeds the level of the [figure 8] channel by a significant amount.
The Josephson Engineering C700A is also known as: C700.
The mic was released in 2004.
