OmnidirectionalJosephson Engineering C550

Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone

The C550 is an omnidirectional measurement mic, offered in two configurations:

  • C550F - low sensitivity of 0.3 mV/Pa, for use in high SPL applications
  • C550H - intended for mic-level inputs; output sensitivity is 10 mV/Pa

The high-sensitivity variant, the C550L (described in the Josephson Series Five cutsheet), has been discontinued.

All models exhibit flat frequency response for on-axis sound.

The capsule in the Series 5 mics was originally a Panasonic WM-60AY, a 6mm omnidirectional capsule with a 3.5 micron polyester diaphragm metallized with a nickel-chromium alloy. This is similar to the capsule found in the Earthworks mics, and the Avenson STO-2.

When the WM-60AY became unavailable, Josephson sourced an alternative capsule, parts of which are machined and assembled in the US in order to achieve the necessary tolerances.

Additional, but dated information about the C550 mics can be found in the following rec.audio.pro discussion about Earthworks’ early OM1 omni:

David Josephson

My C550 measurement mic series uses this capsule [Panasonic WM-60x series] too, but mounted in a 1/2'' diameter (actually 0.520'' to match the ANSI standard) head assembly so it will fit “half inch” standard microphone calibrators — therefore the OM1 and any other such device with a smaller cross-section will be more omnidirectional and have a flatter phase response than my C550.

The “Series Six” mics have lower noise and higher SPL capabilities, due to the use of “lab grade” metal-diaphragm mic capsules.

The Josephson Engineering C550 is also known as: C550L, C550H, C550F.

The mic was released in 1989.
