CardioidHeil Sound PR 22

Cardioid Dynamic Microphone

The PR 22 is large-diaphragm dynamic mic built in a handheld form factor. It shares many performance characteristics with the rest of the Heil PR line:

  • High SPL capability
  • Rear rejection of 40-45 dB
  • Extended frequency response (compared to typical dynamic mics)
  • Great low/mid clarity and articulation
  • Excellent cardioid pattern control

The PR 22 is very similar to the PR 20; the primary difference is that the PR 22 uses a Sorbothane damping system within the body of the microphone to reduce handling noise at 60–100Hz. According to Bob Heil, manufacturers of other live vocal mics typically roll off the response below 125Hz to attenuate handling noise — but are losing musical content at the same time.

Heil’s name for the new damping system is “ISO BAND.”

The PR-22 ships in a soft pouch with a mic clip and three metal windscreens in different colors (black, silver, gold).

Like the rest of the Heil line of stage and studio dynamic microphones, the PR22 has no output transformer. The voice coil itself produces balanced output.

Heil Sound mics are manufactured in the USA and carry a 1-year warranty.

Performing Musician, 2009

Both [the PR-22 and PR-35] seem to project a natural sound without the honky presence peak many mics impose, though you can always add a little upper-mid EQ on the desk if you need more projection. The slightly nasal or phasey character that many dynamic cardioid mics seem to exhibit is also absent, but as both models have a well-extended low end, the low-cut filter may be useful on the PR 35, while the PR 22 would benefit from the low-cut switch on the desk — this will help avoid popping, as well as further reducing spill from bass instruments. Handling noise is commendably low, while susceptibility to popping is about what you’d expect — no problems if you have good mic technique, but if not, use that low-cut filter.

The Heil Sound PR 22 is also known as: PR22.

The mic was released in 2008.
