Flagg Audio Flagg Mic

Dynamic Microphone

The Flagg Mic is a dynamic character microphone housed in a pay telephone handset.

It was designed to be a microphone capable of use in an intense live performance environment. Coming from the punk rock world, founder Randy Carvalho was aware of the abuse a mic could take onstage, so he built the mic in certain kind of payphone handset — the kind normally used in a prison — that is designed to not shatter on impact.

The mic also has the metal armored cable from a payphone, terminating in an XLR male plug. At the other end, the cable is attached to the phone using a proprietary “double-guillotine” anchoring method, and according to Randy, “you’d have to break the phone to get the cable out”.

Each side of the Flagg Mic — both the mouthpiece and the earpiece — contain microphone capsules, each having different sonic characteristics: the “ear” side is 150Ω and the “mouth” side is 600Ω. Because the Flagg Mic is a character mic, Randy encourages experimentation to see which side (capsule) sounds best for the application. Both sides are very directional due to the way they sit inside the phone body, and consequently they reject feedback almost completely.

Also, with durability in mind, both capsules are pierce-proof and can handle extreme sound pressure levels.

Both capsules share the mic’s single mono output. Both capsules are therefore active at all times. According to Flagg, because the capsules must be close to the source to pick up sound — actually touching the source, or at most 2 inches away — the unused capsule simply won’t be heard.

For studio use, the microphone will fit sideways in a standard SM57-style mic clip.

The Flagg Mic comes in either black, red, or yellow.
