Extinct Audio BM9
Bidirectional Ribbon Microphone
The BM9 “Viking” is the flagship ribbon microphone from Extinct Audio. It is a passive design, meaning the mic contains no circuitry to increase its output level. Like most ribbon mics, it produces a bidirectional (aka “figure of eight”) polar pattern.
This mic’s physical design is inspired by the vintage Bang & Olufsen BM3.
Like most passive ribbon microphones, the BM9 has relatively low sensitivity, specified at 2.23mV/Pa. For comparison, the Shure SM57’s sensitivity is ~1.4dB lower, at 1.9mV/Pa. Typical large-diaphragm condenser mics range from 12mV/Pa to 40mV/Pa (15dB or more higher).
The ribbon material is 1.8 microns aluminum. Extinct Audio staff manufactures their ribbon motors in-house, including cutting, crimping, and tensioning ribbons.
The BM9’s stated frequency range is 30Hz-15kHz. The response curve exhibits characteristic similarities to many ribbon microphones, including the relatively soft top end (dropping ~2.5dB above 7kHz) and pronounced proximity effect.
The mic’s output transformer is wound in-house, with output impedance of 300 Ohms. Alternative windings are available by special request.
The BM9 “Viking” ships with a custom wooden box and a hard mount. The Fenrir vibration mount is available at an extra cost.
Extinct Audio also makes a coupler which replaces the domed caps on two BM9s, allowing two microphones to be locked together for Blumlein stereo recording.
Extinct warranties the BM9 for the life of the owner. The lifetime warranty excludes ribbon replacement after the first year, and excludes cosmetic wear of the mic’s exterior.
