BidirectionalCascade Microphones Fat Head BE

Bidirectional Ribbon Microphone

The Fat Head BE is a lower-cost version of the company’s popular Fat Head ribbon microphone.

Like its namesake, it is a passive bidirectional ribbon mic with a symmetrical pickup pattern. It uses the smaller body size of the Fat Head, rather than the larger Fat Head II design.

The BE uses the same ribbon motor and bobbin transformer as the other Fat Head microphones.

It is built with an asymmetrical grille; the rear half is an elongated dome. This presumably has some minor effect on the frequency response of the rear side of the ribbon.

The cost savings in the BE model come from the reduction in accessories and packaging: unlike the original Fat Head, the BE includes only a simple isolation mount and a cardboard box. The value proposition of the BE is that it offers equivalent sonics to the Fat Head, at much lower cost.

The mic was released in 2013.
