Behringer C-1
Cardioid Condenser Microphone
The Behringer C-1 is a side-address, transformerless condenser.
The capsule is a small-diameter cardioid electret, mounted behind a perforated plastic plate that influences the polar pattern. The capsule’s housing has an outside diameter of 17.2mm; the diaphragm diameter is presumably 10-14mm.
Behringer’s claim that this microphone is a “Professional, large-diaphragm condenser microphone for unsurpassed audio quality” is therefore at least partially untrue.
The circuit is built of a mixture of leaded (through-hole) and surface-mount components. The JFET is a Fairchild J202 (TO92 package); the capsule connects to the JFET gate through a 470pF ceramic disc capacitor.
In a signal-injection test, the circuit exhibits linear performance from 20Hz–2kHz, then a broad boost, +1dB @ 10kHz, +2dB @ 20kHz. Distortion performance is typical of transformerless condensers.
The C1 is made with a die cast metal body, and is distinguished by a red LED +48V indicator.
The mic ships with plastic hardmount and plastic foam-lined case.
