OmnidirectionalAvantone Pro AK Type VII

Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone

Avantone’s AK-Type VII is billed as a “high-definition / high SPL” condenser. Avant intends the mic to compete with high-end omnidirectional reference microphones.

The body and capsule assembly are made of polished stainless steel.

The condenser capsule is an electret design with relatively high self-noise (25dBA). The mic’s frequency plot shows a flat response to 5kHz, with a gentle slope to +1dB at 20k, +1.5dB at 30k, then dropping back to -1dB at 40k.

The AK-Type VII ships in a padded wooden storage case with Avantone’s SSM shockmount.

MIX

The Type VII excels in a number of areas. First, it’s small and easy to work with. Its response is flat at the bottom, so be warned that there is not a lot of help at that end of the spectrum. You’ll need to boost some bottom if that’s what you’re looking for. The natural-sounding, flat top end out to 40k helps with percussion and other applications where you need the top end smooth and natural.

The Avantone Pro AK Type VII is also known as: AK.

The mic was released in 2006.
