Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The SCX-25A is a revision to the company’s popular SCX25 microphone. Both are side-address, large-diaphragm mics in a compact lollipop-style form factor. The SCX25A first appeared in Audix’ catalog in 2005.

Changes in the ‘A’ revision have not been fully described by Audix, but appear to include:

  • physical changes allow the mic to be more easily assembled and repaired
  • a circuitry change that improves the mic’s low-frequency response

Audix changed its testing procedures and likely tools as well during 2008, resulting in new specs and frequency graphs being published for every microphone — even ones that the company states have not changed, such as the D2 and D4. Therefore it is not known how much of the change in claimed frequency response between the SCX-25 and SCX25A is due to component changes vs. testing methodology.

The differences are not trivial; if the top graph is real, below 150Hz these are two different microphones.
SCX-25 vs. SCX25A Frequency Response

The 25mm, 5-micron, single-diaphragm capsule remains the same. It has a fixed-cardioid pickup pattern.

The mic ships with a foam-lined wooden case and a nylon mic clip. A variety of clips, a shockmount (p/n SMT-25), pop filters, etc., are available separately.

The SCX25A-PS is a matched pair of SCX-25A mics, shipped with DFlex mic clips and two 20' Monster Cable XLR cables, in a road case. This kit is intended for stereo piano miking but can of course be used in any coincident or spaced-pair stereo application.

ProAudioReview, 2006

I used the mics to capture session ace Jeffery Roach play David Briggs’ 9.5-foot Baldwin grand piano (one of the finest pianos I’ve ever heard). I was blown away by the sound of the SCX25-As.

The SCX25A won a Reader’s Choice award from ProSoundWeb in 2010.

The Audix SCX25A is also known as: SCX25-A, SCX-25A.

The mic was released in 2005.
