Bidirectional Ribbon Microphone

The HRM-8A and HRM-8B constitute one of the main sources of the recent flood “cheap Chinese ribbon” hitting the US market. Like other Alctron mics, this specific brand is generally not available via retail, but can be purchased under a variety of names (Apex, Nady, T.bone); see the sidebar links for specifics.

We’re accumulating full details about this mic — common mods, howto articles, reviews — on the Apex 205 page, as that’s the best-known clone of the HRM-8B.

The HRM-8A and HRM-8B have identical specs, according to Alctron; the two models differ only in the style of the mount. The 8B has a rotating yoke mount, pictured here; the 8A has a simpler mount that attaches to the base of the microphone.

Further, the HRM8 mics differ from the HRM7 mics only in grille shape and color (and possibly mount style).

All the HRM-7 and HRM-8 mics are smaller than the HRM-1 and HRM-2 mics, although the ribbon element in all cases measures 50mm x 5mm. The HRM-7 and HRM-8 mics have a different transformer and magnet assembly than the HRM-1 and HRM-2.
